Twas the night before Palm Sunday (OK, it was just after midnight..)
And all thru the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse (OK, Alyssa was upstairs packing)
I was cleaning up after having made soup,
Which was enough for a very large group.
When what to my wondering ears did I hear,
But a very loud, humongous sounding crash!
It sounded like the ice in the freezer falling down,
But to my surprise, it was the top shelf in the fridge shattering....ker plash!
I just about died and could've really cried,
But called my trustworthy buddy Alyssa, who came flying down to stay by my side (That was a good one, huh?!?!)
We straightened and cleaned it all up,
And look forward to morning, when Kurt says, "Wassup?" (OK, coulda' been better, but I'm tired...)

OH NO MICHELE!!! =( did the soup spill everywhere too??? they should make that fridge glass like car windshields...
on a positive note, good rhyme!
That was the problem...they do make them like car windshields....that's what would happen if a car windshield were to break. They do that intentionally...in millions (and I do mean millions...LOL!) of pieces, it's tough to hurt anyone!
Fortunately, the milk, water and soda bottle was on that side...I did lose a dish of kidney beans (leftover from arroz con pollo earlier in the evening) that fell through to the next shelf. It didn't spill all over the place, but the lid came off and I had no clue if any glass ended up in it!
i thought car windshields still kinda stayed together...little pieces but not entirely unconnected. i guess i should be happy i don't know exactly b/c that would mean i haven't broken any car windshields! =)
Yeah, you are right....just confirmed that with the general (Kurt)! He says there is a layer in between two sheets of glass that holds glass together when it breaks.
I'm impressed-your blog is so educational! That's one disaster my kids have not managed to inflict upon me-a falling refrigerator shelf! I didn't know all that stuff about car windshields either!
It didn't fall....the glass just spontaneously shattered into pieces. I heard a thud and it was the milk, soda and water pitcher falling down onto the next shelf.
glad u clarified! i thought the soup broke the shelf!
Why did the shelf brake? Were those things that were on the shelf too heavy for the shelf?
I'm sorry you had such a mess to clean up, YUK! I always wondered what would make a glass shelf break. I hope it doesn't happen to me or anyone else I know.
I have no clue why the glass just randomly shattered. I didn't have anything differently on the shelf than I normally do. I just know it wasn't pretty!
How about the warranty?? This is unbelievable-what if someone had been reaching inside? Glad no one was hurt-You should contact the company that made the fridge-they may be able to do nothing-but at least you made them aware of the issue, perhaps they'll start changing the way they make the glass?
Michele, talk about bizarre!!! Kudos to Alyssa for helping with cleanup! :)
