On Parking

Adam and I drove up to the Snydersville driver's testing place after school today so he could practice his parallel parking. I really wanted to get out of the car to take a better picture, but there were two other cars there, as well. We were taking turns parking. I would have felt a little silly getting out and taking a picture of Adam parallel parking! He parked correctly about 8/11 times. The three times he didn't make it, he touched the curb with his front tire (and we all know what happens when you touch the curb while parallel parking, don't we, Alyssa.....LOL!!!) At one point, some kid drove up in a Chevy Suburban and parked correctly the first time! We hoped that wasn't the absolute first time he did that!
Technically, you're supposed to be within 12 inches of the curb when done parking in the spot. When Alyssa took her test (the second time) and she successfully parked in this spot, she said she wasn't even straight in the spot and he said, "Fine, pull out..." So who knows how it'll be for Adam? We'll let you know how things go after his test next Wednesday morning!

Here's what my dad taught us when we were learning to park-we used large (tall) green garbage cans to practice between (right on the road we lived on) that way if we hit one there was no car damage and we could "view the cans" in the mirrors because of their height. I even rec. this idea when I was walking out at the middle school a few weeks ago...this poor kid had dragged 2 bike racks into the parking lot to practice between, but he kept hitting them-his Mom was so grateful for the idea, she was convinced her husband was going to be livid. The other advantage is you might be able to do this at home (rather than a drive away) thus saving a bit of gas. Just my thoughts......-Good luck on the test....Michele-good luck with your nerves-2 kids driving! God Bless You!

Adam's been parking two of our cars with space in between so he can try and parallel park right in our driveway...that makes me nervous!

Also, with Alyssa numerous times and Adam once, we went to Notre Dame High School's parking area. They have a space set up to practice parallel parking. That's not too far away!
