Whatcha' Makin?!!?

A bridge....

Adam and Richard were making their new bridge for the official Science Olympiad which is being held at Moravian College on Friday. They placed fourth with the last bridge they made. The bridge needed to be lightweight and could hold up to 35 pounds. I'm not sure how they do the judging, because the bridge that won first place broke with less than 35 pounds, but was lighter than Adam and Richard's (which is amazing because that first bridge they made only weighed 2 ounces!!). This time they are making an arched bridge, which is what they unsuccessfully attempted with the last one. They soaked 1/8 inch pieces of wood in water that was mixed with some type of wood glue. Soaking the wood made it pliable, and glue mixed in with it made the wood stronger. They made a mold and put several pieces of wood together in the form of an arch and put it in the oven at 200 degrees for a few hours to try and dry. More on the bridge later once it's together...I'll be sure to take a picture.
