ok...i'm not very scientifically inclined (maybe you can confirm with kurt) but i've given this some thought and here's what i've come up with.
my personal opinion is that they certainly save money on propane (or whatever they use as fuel for the fire) when the air is cold. wouldn't take much to get that sucker up in the sky when its already really really cold. so maybe they're just frugal.

Well, ideally you'd want a warm trip, but then think about how beautiful everything looks when snow-capped!
