FLSmidth, Inc.
For those of you who didn't know, last week was Engineer's Week. This picture was taken for a display which was in the Morning Call this past weekend. The pic with the smaller group has Kurt in the middle; he's the one with no hair and a white shirt with blue tie!
Aliens In The Bathroom
So...Adam stayed home from school today as he has a bad cold (and probably an ear infection...we'll be visiting the doctor tomorrow). He called me at work earlier asking me where my big yellow Tupperware bowl was. I was afraid to ask why he wanted it! (He's always thinking up new experiments...LOL!) He had Kurt buy him a bottle of Drano the other day...I was afraid the bowl had some connection to the Drano. I really didn't want my bowl ruined, plus I kinda like my house...I was hoping to find it intact when I got home tonite!
It turned out he wanted to make paper mache to construct a pinata for Spanish class. So I'm thinking, well, flour all over the house is certainly better than no house at all! Adam's not very good at cleaning up his messes, so I had no idea what to expect when I got home.
I got home after our Wednesday evening Lenten service tonite and needed to go to the bathroom and walk in only to meet this guy staring at me!
I was told he's drying in the bathroom so the cats won't attack him. I felt like someone was watching me while I was relieving myself. On top of having company, Adam has a fan blowing on Mr. Alien to help him dry, so I was freezing on top of it!
Finally, I was expecting flour/paper mache/newspaper/etc. all over the place; I was pleasantly surprised to find just the dirty dishes in the sink!

Finally
Yippee! The DSL is hooked up! I am sooo excited! In addition to people being able to get in touch with us now on our home phone, everything is just so fast on the computer! I can click on streaming news stories and have it load in just seconds, and then listen to it on top of it! The icing on the cake is that we also got a wireless set-up, so if I want to sit at the kitchen table I can; I don't have to just sit in my one token spot on the sofa!

Nostalgia
I was cleaning some stuff out this AM and came across my nursing school cap. It's been years since I wore it. I actually have three of them, two of them are totally yellowed! As students, we were so proud of our caps...in fact, that was actually one thing that I looked at when I was deciding where I wanted to go to nursing school.
And my pin...I wore it every day on my jacket, til one day I looked down and it was missing. I was devastated. I wasn't sure where I lost it, I wasn't sure when I lost it. We searched high and low and never found it. About three months after having lost it, and thinking I'd never see it again, a housekeeper came out of ICU Room #13 with it in her hands asking if anyone had lost their nursing school pin! I couldn't believe it! Since then, it has resided in my jewelry box!
I believe the pins only cost about $7, so I could have easily had it replaced, but it just wouldn't have been the same. There was a lot of hard work that went into earning it...

The Irony of It All
On Snowstorms and Work
I have taken some good-natured ribbing this week from a couple of people because I tredged into work on Wednesday morning in the middle of the recent winter storm. Believe me, I would have much rather stayed in my nice warm house with a mug of hot chocolate! But I have a responsibility to my job....and felt the need to make the attempt to get to work. I believe this comes from my many years at the hospital when you didn't have a choice; you went to work. It was even worse because I worked in the Dialysis Unit. There was no one else in the hospital who knew how to dialyze; the 7-8 of us were the only ones who could do our job and there were patients counting on us to be there. I remember many years ago when I worked in the ICU at Allentown Hospital being picked up by a member of the 4 Wheeler club. He picked up a few of us in my area, took us to work, and then brought us home the next morning.
It almost was exciting when there was a big snowstorm; we would go prepared to stay for several days if necessary. I recall working 24 hour shifts on a couple of occasions (that was when I was much younger...I could never do that now...LOL!!). I also recall sleeping in a hospital bed a few times in one of the empty rooms in the ICU. The hospital would give us free meals; we'd walk around in our slippers; security would help shovel our cars out.
I realize that now that I am in an office I don't have to worry about relieving someone so they can go home, nor are there patients there to be cared for, but it's still ingrained in me that I have an obligation to get to work.
Just call me old-schooled, I guess....

Snippets
These are the flowers Kurt gave me for Valentine's Day. Aren't they pretty? He got them at BJ's. I have no clue why this picture is sideways....it isn't in my picture folder. Sorry!
This is Adam snowblowing the driveway yesterday. I think he tried everything and anything to get out of doing it!! He tried to hook up a small plow to his 4 wheeler, so he could ride instead of walk! With the snow being so heavy, it wasn't too effective!
Frodo (in the orange) was laying on the love seat just minding his own business, when Sassy jumped up to lay down. The love seat is one of her favorite places to hang out. Well, this didn't sit well with Frodo...I could tell he was on the verge of attacking her!
After staring at Sassy for about five minutes, and eventually not doing anything, Frodo finally settled down for his nap. Aren't they cute?!?!?
What to do on a snow day! Catch up on that sleep!!

The Bad, The Ugly....and the Disappointing
Notice I didn't say 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.' Adam informed us today he received a detention...well, as of this writing, he informed ME of his detention. He hasn't chosen to tell his father yet. It's been an interesting evening, however. He collected the garbage tonite without being told, he has been very polite to Kurt, he hasn't talked back to him, he's cleaning his room without being told again and again....
He apparently was overheard telling some kid that another kid was something I don't care to write here and a teacher overheard him. That teacher reported him and as a result has been given this two hour after school detention.
As he was telling me about this, he kept saying that he didn't feel the teacher should have reported him. He said he even went up to the kid who he said this bad word about and asked him if he minded that he called him this word. Supposedly the kid said that he didn't care and then proceeded to go up to the teacher and asked him not to report Adam. The teacher said, sorry, it was too late.
I told him that what he said was wrong, he should accept responsibility for what he said and not try to blame it on the teacher that he received this detention.

Mystery Pic
Ever since Adam saw Jamie do her mystery pics, he has been bugging me to do it, too. And since I checked with her and she didn't mind me doing it, I assured Adam I would periodically post a pic for people to try and figure out what the pic is. The kids collaborated on this one, and had both decided it was a stupid. I, on the other hand, thought it was brilliant! And since it's my blog...I'll post what I want to post! So there....
Desperate
Guess it's been a boring kinda week! Kurt was in Denmark Sunday thru Friday; he got home late Friday evening. When he is away, that is my cue to NOT cook! We either went out or ordered out every night! On Monday, after Alyssa had some dental work done, we went to Doughboy's Pizza near Wind Gap for an early supper. The following pics were taken by Adam while we were waiting for our food to come. He spilled some water on his placemat and a tiny air bubble landed smack dab in the middle of the letter C in the word cheese. Now that I have my new camera, I tend to carry it in my purse with me all the time. He thought it was the perfect opportunity to take a picture or two! So because I am desperate, I am posting them!
Note the bubble on the C
That same day, as we were driving home, I noticed two helicopters hovering in the sky. I had chosen to take the back way home that day for a change of scenery. Well, it turned out that we got the chance to see the wreckage of the glider that had crashed that day and injured two NJ men. It turned out the two helicopters hovering were news crews, one of them NBC 10. Fortunately no one was killed in the crash.
