Oops!

Oops, don't know how I missed this picture in with the Christmas Day pics. Kurt got me the Attic Heirloom (by Broyhill) piece of furniture and I got him the HD radio for Christmas. We did have a boom box sitting there on a three drawer Rubbermaid stand. The plant is Alyssa's from her dorm, so I guess I'll have to find something to replace it with in a couple of weeks!

Like Family

Renee and I were besties growing up. She and her family live in another state now, but often times come to PA to visit family over the holidays. They spent several hours with us today. It was great catching up. With some people, you can see them once a year and it's like you were never away from them....Renee and I are like that!

Me and Renee

(Adam couldn't understand why I would want to take pics in front of the Christmas tree...said you wouldn't be able to see the tree anyways...and he was right...LOL!!)

Joseph's Song

Kurt sang this song on Christmas Day. He is a huge fan of Michael Card who wrote it. This is just a portion of the song. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas!

To all my loyal readers, I thank you for supporting and reading my blog. Just knowing that so many people read Nephron News, makes it all worthwhile! To all my faithful commenters, thank you even more! Your comments mean so much to me and makes it even more worthwhile to me!

It seems that wherever I go, I have someone tell me that they read Nephron News. I even have some international readers (OK, so it's extended family from Ireland...LOL!!).

I wish you all a blessed Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year! And thank you all!!

Christmas Get Together

After the cantata at church, we headed for our family's pre-Christmas gathering. Our sister in law's family is here from Ireland....for some of them it's the first time they've ever been to America. Kurt's brother and his wife hosted the event (who just moved into their brand new beautiful house), with his sister and family supplying the desserts and Christmas cookies.

Christmas Cantata

Our church held our annual Christmas Cantata last evening. As usual, Kurt participated. Alyssa had sung in it the past two years, but with being away at college, she didn't have the opportunity to practice with the group, so sat it out this year. (Although, apparently, she could have gone to the one practice that was held this past weekend and still participated, as there was one teen who is also away at college and made it to that one practice and was part of the cantata...we'll have to remember that for next year....)

Interesting

Borrowed from Stories Behind The Great Traditions of Christmas:

Most scholars of the Catholic church deem the song The Twelve Days of Christmas a very important surviving example of a time when that denomination used codes to disguise their teachings. Teaching the Catholic faith in the sixteenth century was outlawed. To hide the illegal and important elements of their teachings, clerics composed poems that seemed silly to most people. These verses, however, were veiled works that taught the church's most important tenets.

***********************************************************************************
There's much more to this story, but I don't want to bore you, but thought you might find this of interest.

(The true love mentioned in the song is not a sweetheart, but the Catholic church's code for God. The person who receives the gift represents anyone who accepts Christ as the Son of God and as Savior.)

************************************************************************************

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me....a partridge in a pear tree. The partridge in a pear tree represents Jesus, the Son of God, whose birthday we celebrate on the first day of Christmas. Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge, the only bird that will die to protect its young.

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me....two turtledoves. These twin birds represent the Old and New Testaments.

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me....three French hens. These birds represent faith, hope and love.

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....four calling birds. One of the easiest facets of the song's code to figure out, these fowl are the four Gospels-Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....five gold rings. The gift of the rings represents the first five books of the Old Testament, known as the Torah or Pentateuch.

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....six geese a-laying. These lyrics can be traced back to the first story found in the Bible. Each egg is a day in creation, a time when the world was 'hatched' or formed by God.

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me....seven swans a-swimming. It would take someone quite familiar with the Bible to identify this gift. Hidden in the code are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading and compassion. As swans are one of the most beautiful and graceful creatures on earth, they would seem to be a perfect symbol for the spiritual gifts.

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....eight maids a-milking. As Christ came to save even the lowest of the low, this gift represents the ones who would receive his word and accept his grace. Being a milkmaid was about the worst job one could have in England during this period; this code conveyed that Jesus cared as much about servants as he did those of royal blood. The eight who were blessed included the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers and those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....nine ladies dancing. These nine dancers were really the gifts known as the fruit of the Spirit. The fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....ten lords a-leaping. This is probably the easiest gift to understand. As lords were judges and in charge of the law, this code for the Ten Commandments was fairly straightforward to Catholics.

On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me....eleven pipers piping. This is almost a trick question, as most think of the disciples in terms of a dozen. But when Judas betrayed Jesus and committed suicide, there were only eleven men who carried out the gospel message.

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me....twelve drummers drumming. The final gift is tied directly to the Catholic Church. The drummers are the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles' Creed.

(I wonder if they had anything to do with Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer?!?!?!? )

Bad Girl

We brought Alyssa's two plants home and struggled coming up with a spot that had enough light, but was hopefully out of little kitty-sight. Obviously this plan didn't work so much! She realized she had been spotted and was trying to make her get-away! Bad kitty!

Christmas

Just fooling around cuz' I'm bored! We go to pick Alyssa up tomorrow...I'm sure I won't be bored once she gets home...cookies to make, presents to wrap, lunch with friends! The bottom three ornaments are official White House Christmas ornaments from past years. I have a friend who has gotten me one since 2001. They are gorgeous. Each one is specifically designed to relate to a past president and something he has been known for or a particular way he decorated the White House.

Sunrise

I've taken a bit of grief for my sunset pics...so here's what I caught one day recently on my way to work. Beautiful!

Farewell

Yesterday Kurt, Adam, my mom and I drove to my old hometown to bid farewell to our former pastor and his wife. We had been good friends with them prior to us moving away. After thirty three years, they made the decision to leave the church and will be relocating where he will serve as chaplain for an assisted living facility. Even though we no longer attend that church, it seems like it just won't be the same without them there. They were one of the few remaining ties to the community I lived in from 5th to 12th grade. I was their kids first babysitter....and now look at them! (Someone is getting old....)

From Left to Right: David, Linsy, Arthur, Lauren

It was a highly emotional day for all; it's tough to say goodbye after being at one place for that long of a time. We attended the service, which was his last, then there was a wonderful luncheon afterwards with a program to follow.

From left to right: Bev, me, Deana

There were lots of people there that I recognized, but I no longer remembered their names! Best part of all was we sat with my bestest friends when I was growing up. Bev and I were in the same grade, Deana is a year younger. They lived across the street and we did everything together! Oddly enough, Bev and I both went to nursing school after graduation.

Who's not looking at the camera now?

Listening Pleasure

For your listening pleasure....

A First

Today our bell choir played for a wedding at our church. We have been rehearsing for it since back in August! We played two Christmas songs for the prelude music, then O Perfect Love as the mothers were entering and lighting the candles. Next, we played Pachelbel's Canon in D as the bridesmaids came down the aisle. Finally, we played Trumpet Voluntary for the bride's walk down the aisle. Unfortunately, we were all so nervous, that I don't think any of us could enjoy it! We did a wonderful job, if I must say so myself! We came early to run through the songs a couple of times....we have a theory that when we do terribly at practice, we generally do well for the performance. Let me just say we played really, really well for the performance!! That should tell you how we did at the practice before hand!! I'm afraid if word gets out, we're gonna become popular for weddings!
